Our training is divided into three main areas: Basics, Self Defense, and Sparring. Beginners start with fundamental punching and kicking techniques. Intermediate students focus on escaping common holds and learning takedowns. Advanced students delve into wristlocks, armlocks, chokes, and throws, transitioning from prearranged training to theory and practical application. Black Belts master defense against various threats, including clubs, knives, and guns, while also refining ground control techniques.
Throughout your journey, you'll explore kata (forms) and bunkais (form translations), discovering how seemingly simple motions in forms translate to blocks, strikes, takedowns, and control techniques. Weapons training further equips you to utilize your environment for self-defense. This comprehensive approach not only prepares you but also boosts your self-esteem and situational awareness to avoid conflicts.
Our karate style, Shorei Goju Ryu, draws inspiration from Okinawan and Chinese martial arts. It blends the strengths of external and internal Chinese arts with Okinawan fighting techniques, offering a well-rounded system. Grandmaster Robert A. Trias integrated Goju Ryu katas into Shuri-te, creating the foundation of our system.
Shorei Goju Ryu embraces the philosophy of "No Limitations." Unlike some styles with strict limitations, our system encompasses a wide range of strikes, blocks, kicks, locks, sweeps, takedowns, and pressure points. This versatility allows every student, regardless of size or athletic ability, to find techniques that suit their physique, personality, and situation. Our style's adaptability ensures that there's something for everyone in our martial arts training.
For more information about our style and associated schools, visit the National Shorei Goju Ryu website at https://www.nationalshoreigojuryuassociation.com/. Additionally, we are a PKC Associated School, and those interested in tournament competition can explore further details on their website.
